![]() AS 40 has been in the care of the Navy since 2000, and it has sailed over 12,614 nautical miles since returning to Guam in June 2017. On January 23, 2018, the nuclear submarine USS Frank Cable returned to its homeport at Naval Base Guam. She spent three weeks there before sailing to the island of Guam. She arrived in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on February 13, 2017. Navy‘s iconic submarine, the USS Frank Cable (AS 40), was then upgraded in 2017. A $17 million contract was awarded to Vigor Shipyards to dry dock the US Navy’s flagship, the USS Emory S Land (AS 39). According to the US Navy FY17 shipbuilding plan, a tender for AS(X) submarines is included. The Navy intends to begin construction on the new submarine tender in the mid- to late 2020s. In 20, the US Navy will retire the ships the USS Frank Cable and the USS Emory S Land. Two 644-foot sub tenders can accommodate up to 800 people. The medical ward at Medical on the O-1 level contains 14 patient beds. ![]() There are 26 repair shops in the repair department that provide a variety of repair services. The hull is made up of two parts: the hull and the repair. As of 2020, the tenders will serve both home-ports in Guam and all over the world. They provide services on a 24-hour basis, whether a ship is anchored or is attached to one of the tender’s vessels. The US Navy currently operates two 1970s-built sub tender boats, the ship SYDNEY S. The USCGC Aquila (WMSL 758) is the Navy’s secondary submersible tender, and is responsible for the maintenance and support of up to four nuclear-powered submarines. The USCGC Paladin (WMSL 757) is the Navy’s primary submersible tender, responsible for the maintenance and support of up to fourteen nuclear-powered submarines. The United States Navy currently operates two submersible tenders, both of which are based in Hawaii.
